  • peeled cucumbers - 1 item
  • medium onions, sliced - 8 item
  • cider vinegar - 3 c
  • water - 1 c
  • sugar - 4 c
  • salt - 1 tsp
  • turmeric - 1 tsp
  • celery seed - 1 tsp
  • dry mustard - 1 tsp
  • ginger - 1/2 tsp
  • cinnamon or 1 cinnamon stick - 1/2 tsp

How to make bread and butter pickles:

Slice enough cucumbers to make 1 gallon. Soak cucumbers and onions in salt water and ice cubes for 1 hour. Mix remaining ingredients. Drain cucumbers and onions; add to the mixture. After boiling for 1 minute, put in jars and seal. Makes 5 to 6 pints.
