Bread and butter pickles
Ingredients/Components
- sugar - 5 c
- salt - 1/2 c
- ground cloves - 1/2 tsp
- celery seed - 1 tsp
- mustard seed - 2 Tbsp
- green peppers - 2 item
- turmeric
- cucumbers - 1 gal
- small white onions - 8 item
- mild vinegar - 5 c
How to make bread and butter pickles:
Wash cucumbers. Slice cucumbers, onions and peppers thinly. Mix with salt and bury in cracked ice. Let stand for 3 hours.Drain thoroughly, make pickling syrup and pour over pickles. Heat over low flame to scalding. Use wooden spoon to stir occasionally. Pour into hot sterilized jars and seal.
