Ingredients/Components

  • sugar - 4 c
  • salt - 1/2 c
  • water - 2 c
  • vinegar - 2 qt
  • celery seed - 1 Tbsp
  • mustard seed - 1 Tbsp
  • turmeric - 1 Tbsp
  • thinly sliced onions - 1 pt
  • thinly sliced cucumbers - 1 gal

How to make bread and butter pickles:

Combine cucumbers and onions. Sprinkle with salt; add water and let set for 3 hours. Drain thoroughly.

Combine sugar, vinegar and spices. Bring to a boil. Add vegetables and heat all together. Pack in jars and seal.
