Bread and butter pickles
Ingredients/Components
- sugar - 5 c
- salt - 1/3 c
- vinegar
- chopped green pepper - 1 item
- cloves garlic - 3 item
- celery seed
- medium onions, sliced - 6 item
- mustard seed - 2 Tbsp
- turmeric
- cucumbers, sliced thin - 12 item
How to make bread and butter pickles:
Sauce:3 c. vinegar1 1/2 tsp. turmeric2 Tbsp. mustard seed5 c. sugar1 1/2 tsp. celery seed Put cucumbers, onions, green pepper and garlic in a large container; sprinkle 1/3 cup salt over the top. Dump 1 or 2 trays ice cubes on top. Let set about 3 hours and drain.Bring sauce ingredients to a boil. Put cucumbers, onions and green pepper in boiling sauce. Stir; bring to a full boil and remove from heat. Two cookings will make crisper pickles. Cool and put in canning jars.
