Ingredients/Components

  • sugar - 5 c
  • salt - 1/2 c
  • cider vinegar - 5 c
  • mustard seed - 2 Tbsp
  • turmeric - 1 tsp
  • cloves ground - 1/2 tsp
  • medium white onions - 8 item
  • to 30 cucumbers - 25 item
  • large, sweet bell peppers - 2 item

How to make bread and butter pickles:

Cut cucumbers, onions and peppers in large dishpan, etc. Add salt and cover with lots of ice. Let stand for 3 hours, stirring occasionally so salt will be distributed evenly through cucumbers. In another large pot, combine vinegar, sugar and other spices. Bring to a boil. Drain cucumbers and add them to the vinegar mixture. Heat thoroughly but do not boil. Pack in jars and seal at once.
