Bread and butter pickles
Ingredients/Components
- sugar - 5 c
- salt - 1/2 c
- cider vinegar - 5 c
- mustard seed - 2 Tbsp
- turmeric - 1 tsp
- cloves ground - 1/2 tsp
- medium white onions - 8 item
- to 30 cucumbers - 25 item
- large, sweet bell peppers - 2 item
How to make bread and butter pickles:
Cut cucumbers, onions and peppers in large dishpan, etc. Add salt and cover with lots of ice. Let stand for 3 hours, stirring occasionally so salt will be distributed evenly through cucumbers. In another large pot, combine vinegar, sugar and other spices. Bring to a boil. Drain cucumbers and add them to the vinegar mixture. Heat thoroughly but do not boil.
