Ingredients/Components

  • medium size cucumbers - 3 gal
  • medium onions - 8 item
  • salt - 1/2 c
  • white sugar - 5 c
  • water - 2 c
  • vinegar - 3 c
  • mustard seed - 2 Tbsp
  • turmeric - 1 tsp
  • celery seed - 2 Tbsp

How to make bread and butter pickles:

Slice cucumbers. Do not peel. Slice onions. Dissolve salt in water and pour over sliced vegetables. Let stand 3 hours and drain. Combine vinegar, sugar and spices and bring to boil. Add drained vegetables and heat to boiling point, do not boil. Pack in hot jars and seal.
