  • sugar - 3 Tbsp
  • salt - 1 Tbsp
  • sifted flour - 7 7
  • warm water - 1/2 c
  • soft shortening - 2 Tbsp
  • yeast - 2 pkg
  • lukewarm liquid 3/4 c

How to make basic white bread:

Combine yeast with 1/2 cup warm water; add lukewarm liquid, stirring to dissolve. Stir in half of flour and remaining ingredients. Beat until smooth.

Use your hands to mix in enough remaining flour until dough cleans bowl. Turn onto lightly floured board. Cover; let rise for 10 to 15 minutes. Knead until smooth and blistered (about 10 minutes). Cover with cloth and let rise in warm place until double (about 1 hour). Punch down and let rise again until almost double (about 30 minutes). Divide into 2 parts. Round up, cover and let rest for 10 minutes. Shape into loaves; let rise and bake at 425° for 25 to 30 minutes. Makes 2 loaves.
