Ingredients/Components

  • walnuts, finely chopped - 3 c
  • almonds, finely chopped - 1 c
  • cinnamon - 1/4 tsp
  • ground cloves - 1/8 tsp
  • sugar - 1/3 c
  • strudel leaves filo - 1 lb
  • sweet melted butter - 2 c
  • water
  • honey - 1/2 c
  • lemon juice - 1 tsp
  • few pieces lemon rind - 1 item
  • cinnamon stick - 1 item

How to make baklava:

Syrup:2 c. water2 c. sugar1/2 c. honey1 tsp. lemon juice few pieces lemon rind cinnamon stick Preheat oven to 350°. Place 5 pastry leaves in 13 x 9 1/2 x 2-inch pan. Butter each as it is stacked. Evenly sprinkle 5 heaping tablespoons of nut mixture. Place 2 leaves on top; brush with butter. Sprinkle 5 tablespoons of nut mixture; repeat 4 times. Place remaining pastry leaves on top, buttering every second leaf. Trim edges with sharp knife. Score top sheets in diamond shapes using up and down motion. Bake for 45 minutes to 1 hour. Turn off heat and let cool in oven.

Syrup: Bring to a boil and cook for 10 minutes. Pour hot syrup over cooled baklava.
