Ingredients/Components
- sugar - 1 c
- cinnamon - 3 tsp
- water - 3 c
- chopped walnuts - 2 lb
- lemon juice - 1 tsp
- cloves - 1/2 tsp
- honey - 1 lb
- filo dough* - 2 lb
- butter sweet, melted - 3/4 lb
- Mix nuts with cinnamon, cloves and sugar
How to make baklava:
*Use ten sheets for top and bottom layer and 6 to 10 sheets between layers.Mix nuts with cinnamon, cloves and sugar. Grease baking pan. Add bottom ten sheets of filo dough lightly on top of each other. Lightly brush each layer of dough with melted butter. Apply nut mixture next. Continue layering dough and nuts in this way, ending with ten sheets of dough on top. Butter top and cut baklava in diamond shapes before baking. Bake at 350° for 1/2 hour. Lower to 250° for 1 hour. Remove from oven and pour cold syrup (recipe follows) over hot baklava immediately. Cover with cloth for 1/2 hour. Remove cover and serve.Syrup:2 lb. sugar1 lb. honey3 c. water1 tsp. lemon juice Make ahead. Place sugar, honey and water in pan. Cook until sugar thickens; add lemon juice. Cook approximately 40 minutes on medium heat. Cool and refrigerate until baklava is baked.
Note: Be sure to cut baklava before baking.
