Ingredients/Components

  • sugar - 1/3 c
  • salt - 1/2 tsp
  • molasses - 2 Tbsp
  • maple syrup - 1/3 c
  • mustard - 1/4 tsp
  • small onion - 1 item
  • bacon - 1/4 lb
  • beans - 1 lb

How to make baked beans:

Soak beans overnight. Drain and cover with water. Bake at 300°, covered, until soft.

Test: Take 2 or 3 beans on a spoon and blow on them. If the skin peels back, they are soft (2 pounds, approximately 3 hours).

Mix the sugar, molasses, mustard, syrup and salt. Add water from beans and stir until dissolved. Taste for flavor. Add salt and sugar, if needed. Add to beans and cubed bacon. Add more water to cover beans if there is not enough cooking water. Bake at 250° from 6 to 8 hours.
