Au gratin potatoes
Ingredients/Components
- milk
- flour - 7 Tbsp
- margarine or butter - 6 Tbsp
- salt and pepper to taste - 1 item
- medium onion, chopped - 1 item
- Cheddar cheese, grated - 12 oz
- medium large potatoes - 12 item
How to make au gratin potatoes:
Boil potatoes in jackets until tender. Let cool slightly. Peel.While potatoes are cooking prepare white sauce as follows: Melt margarine in medium saucepan. Stir in flour for a minute or so, slowly add milk and stir with a whisk to prevent lumps. Cook 5 to 10 minutes until thickened. (If desired, add onion to melted margarine, saute for a few minutes, then continue with flour and milk.) Add salt and pepper. Layer in Dutch oven (spray with Pam) or large casserole dish as follows: 1/2 cup sauce, 1/3 of potatoes (sliced about 1/4-inch thick), 1/3 of sauce and 1/3 cheese. Repeat 2 times. Bake at 350° for 45 to 60 minutes (until sauce bubbles). Yields 12 large servings. Recipe can be halved, 6 servings.
