Applesauce doughnuts
Ingredients/Components
- cinnamon - 1/2 tsp
- eggs - 2 item
- vanilla - 1/2 tsp
- baking powder
- baking soda - 1/2 tsp
- vegetable oil - 1 item
- packed light brown sugar - 1/4 c
- honey - 1/4 c
- ground cloves - 1/2 tsp
- ground nutmeg - 1/2 tsp
- unsweetened applesauce - 1 c
- whole wheat flour - 1 c
- unbleached white flour
- apple cider, apple juice or milk - 1/4 c
How to make applesauce doughnuts:
Fill heavy saucepan 2/3 full with vegetable oil; heat to 360° on deep fat frying thermometer. Sift flour, baking powder, soda and spices together; set aside. Combine honey, brown sugar and eggs. Add 2 tablespoons oil, beating thoroughly. Alternately add dry ingredients and cider, mixing well. Stir in applesauce and vanilla. Carefully drop batter by level tablespoons, 3 or 4 at a time, into hot oil; do not overcrowd. Fry, turning once, for 3 to 4 minutes or until golden brown. Remove with tongs and drain on paper towel.
