Ingredients/Components

  • cinnamon - 1 tsp
  • salt - 1/2 tsp
  • baking soda - 1 tsp
  • egg - 1 item
  • raisins - 1 c
  • cloves - 1/2 tsp
  • cake flour
  • butter or shortening - 1/2 c
  • caramel icing - 1 item
  • currants, nutmeats or dates - 1 c
  • white or packed brown sugar - 1 c
  • thick, lightly sweetened applesauce - 1 c

How to make applesauce cake:

Preheat oven to 350°. Have all ingredients about 70°. Sift before measuring.

Sift a little of the flour over raisins and currants, nutmeats or dates. Re-sift the remainder with salt, baking soda, cinnamon and cloves. Cream butter or shortening until soft. Add white or packed brown sugar gradually and cream until light. Beat in egg.

Stir the flour mixture gradually into the butter mixture until the batter is smooth. Add the raisins, nutmeats and thick, lightly sweetened applesauce. Stir it into the batter.

Bake in a greased, 9-inch tube pan, 50 to 60 minutes. Spread, when cool, with caramel icing.
