  • medium apples - 10 item
  • water - 1 C
  • sugar - 1 C
  • cornstarch - 2 Tbsp
  • cinnamon - 1 tsp
  • water used to thin cornstarch - 1/4 C
  • flour
  • baking powder - 1/2 tsp
  • tsp salt - 1 item
  • shortening - 3/4 C
  • egg yolks - 2 item
  • lemon juice - 1 Tbsp
  • powdered sugar

How to make apple squares:

Step 2 - Dough:2 C. flour1/2 tsp. baking powder1 tsp salt3/4 C. shortening2 egg yolks1 Tbsp. lemon juice1/2 C. water Glaze:1 1/2 C. powdered sugar1 Tbsp. lemon juice Peel, core and slice apples. Combine with water, sugar and cinnamon. cook for about 10 minutes. Combine cornstarch and water. Stir into apples to thicken. Cook 5 minutes longer. Cool Cut shortening into flour, baking powder and salt mixture until it looks like peas. Add egg yolks, water and lemon juice. Mixture is kneaded until mixed. Don't overdo or crust will get tough. Divide into 2 parts. Roll one to fit bottom of a 10 x 13 baking pan. Put cooled filling into pan. Cover with remaining dough rolled to fit top. Bake at 425 degrees for 20 to 30 minutes, or until brown.

Add enough lemon juice to powdered sugar to form a glaze. Spread glaze over the top of apple squares as it comes from the oven.
