  • sugar
  • cinnamon - 1/2 tsp
  • milk - 1/2 c
  • nutmeg - 1/2 tsp
  • baking powder - 2 tsp
  • shortening - 2/3 c
  • all-purpose flour
  • margarine - 1/4 c
  • small apples, peeled and cored - 6 item

How to make apple dumplings:

Syrup: In saucepan, combine 1 1/2 cups sugar, 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg and 2 cups water. Boil; reduce heat. Cook 5 minutes. Remove from heat; stir in butter or margarine. Set aside.

Pastry: Combine flour, baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Cut in shortening until coarse crumbs form. Add milk all at once; stir until moistened. Form into ball and roll out into 8 x 12-inch rectangle on lightly floured surface. Cut into 6 squares.

Place an apple in center of each square. Sprinkle apple generously with mixture of 1/3 cup of sugar and remaining cinnamon and nutmeg. Dot with additional butter or margarine. Moisten edges of dough; fold corners to center atop apple. Pinch edges together. Place in a 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking dish. Pour syrup over dumplings. Bake in 375° oven for 45 minutes or until apples are tender. Serve with ice cream. Serves 6.
