  • sugar
  • cinnamon - 1 tsp
  • salt - 1/2 tsp
  • flour
  • margarine or butter - 1 c
  • baking powder - 1/2 tsp
  • beaten egg yolks - 2 item
  • medium apples, sliced - 4 item
  • slightly beaten egg whites - 2 item

How to make apple bars:

Combine 2 cups flour, 1/2 cup sugar, baking powder and salt. Cut in butter until crumbs are the size of small peas. Stir in egg yolks. Divide mixture in half. Press half over the bottom of pan. Combine apples, remaining sugar, flour and cinnamon. Arrange over bottom crust. Crumble remaining dough over apples. Brush egg whites over all. Bake in a 350° oven for 40 minutes. Cool. Drizzle with thin powdered sugar icing, if desired.

Hint: Pressing the top layer of dough down before brushing on the egg white makes the process easier. More apples may also be used. Yields 24 bars.
