  • packed brown sugar - 1/4 c
  • granulated sugar - 1/2 c
  • all-purpose flour - 1 Tbsp
  • grated lemon peel - 1 tsp
  • each ground cinnamon and nutmeg - 1/4 tsp
  • medium baking apples, peeled, cored and thinly sliced - 6 item
  • dark raisins - 1 c
  • unbaked 9-inch pie crust - 1 item

How to make american apple pie:

Preheat oven to 425°. Spray 9-inch deep-dish pie plate with vegetable spray. In a large bowl, combine brown sugar, granulated sugar, flour, lemon peel, cinnamon and nutmeg; mix well. Add apples to sugar mixture; stir until coated. Stir in raisins; spoon into prepared pan. Place pie crust on top of filling. Trim edges, pressing against edge of pan. Using a sharp knife, cut 2 or 3 slits or steam vents in the crust.

To glaze: Brush pie crust lightly with beaten egg. Sprinkle with sugar. Bake until crust is golden brown, about 35 to 40 minutes.

Choose apples that will hold shape during baking, such as Granny Smith, Jonathan, Winesap, etc.
